Not only does sex ed help young people in the United States empower people to talk about topics like sexuality, changing bodies, having sex, and, of course, periods, but research has shown that it reduces teen pregnancySTDsand encourages healthy relationships between teens.
A major debate right now in the world of education is sexual education. Some schools, especially private or religiously affiliated schools, tend to not have any degree of sex ed, and if they do have any at all, it is often a lesson that teaches abstinence only. Many of these parents argue that the only thing that should be taught in schools is abstinence-only sexual education, or nothing at all. Supporters of abstinence-only sexual education argue that this is the most effective way to prevent teen pregnancy, and in theory this makes sense, however, in practice it has proven to be unsuccessful.

When only 13 states in the nation require sex education to be medically accurate, a lot is left up to interpretation in teenage health literacy. Research published by the Public Library of Science shows that when sex education is comprehensive, students feel more informed, make safer choices and have healthier outcomes — resulting in fewer unplanned pregnancies and more protection against sexually transmitted diseases and infection. Of course many young students pick up sexual health information from sources other than school — parents, peers, medical professionals, social media and pop culture.
Young people consistently cite their parents as the biggest influence on their decisions about sex, and they report wanting to hear more from their parents on these important topics. The data are also clear about the impact of these conversations. Young people who report having positive conversations with their parents about sex and sexuality are more likely to wait to have sex and to use condoms and contraception when they do become sexually active. I was fortunate to be raised by parents who fostered open communication on a range of topics, cultivated a close and trusting relationship between us and set clear expectations around healthy behaviors.
